Is stress causing you physical pain? Acupuncture can help

As an acupuncturist I see many patients with physical symptoms such as lower back pain, stiff neck and shoulders, tension headaches and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS has a whole gamut of symptoms including bloating, heartburn, constipation/diarrhoea, wind and abdominal pain.

Most of these patients are suffering day after day with these conditions and taking painkillers, anti-inflammatory medication or antacids to keep symptoms under control.

Frustrated at constantly being on medication they look for alternatives. Luckily there is a lot of positive press about acupuncture being able to help with these problems.

At the first treatment I take a thorough case history to understand what makes the symptoms worse. After a bit of detective work most patients identify stress as the number one aggravator of their symptoms. Some patients already knew this but for others it is enlightening to see that there is a connection.

It’s easy to dismiss the connection between how we feel and what we are feel physically in our bodies but consider when you are nervous about a big meeting or phone call you may get “butterflies” in your stomach. Or are you someone who finds their shoulders creeping up to their ears creating tension headaches?

In my experience as an acupuncturist we all hold our stress in different places. Some people hold it in their lower back, some in their neck, shoulders, head area and others in their abdomen. In women it can also present as PMT, period pains or cycle irregularities.

How can acupuncture help?

The body is a finely tuned machine which has systems in place to help regulate it. Prolonged stress can weaken these regulatory systems. If the body’s vital energy is weaker the flow of energy around the body will be slower, our muscles weaker, energetic blockages occur and this can cause physical pain.

As an acupuncturist I use fine needles to activate specific energy points on the body to strengthen the regulatory systems and help bring both body and mind back to health. The result is that patients report an improvement in their symptoms, the need for less medication, they have more energy and find that they are able to deal with stress better. Acupuncture treatment has ended the energy-sapping vicious cycle and created a happy, healthy virtuous one.

Acupuncture is now widely used and accepted all over the world. In the UK more and more people are finding out what acupuncture can do for them. Why not find out if you could benefit?
